Simulation Based Inference for Galaxy Evolution 2026

The third installment in our series of meetings bringing together experts in galaxy evolution and simulation based inference (SBI) techniques, to discuss challenges, share insights and present the latest practical tools for applying SBI to problems in galaxy evolution.

Dates: 23rd - 26th June, 2026 Location: Cambridge, UK

Scientific Rationale

Simulation Based Inference (SBI; also known as implicit or likelihood-free inference, see Cranmer et al. 2020) is increasingly being applied to many astrophysical problems. In the field of galaxy evolution there are a number of unique opportunities to utilise these methods, but also novel challenges.

Following the success of our 2024 and 2025 meetings, we aim to bring together both experts in SBI as well as galaxy evolution experts with SBI experience, to discuss problems and solutions faced when applying these methods to a diverse range of problems in galaxy evolution. We aim to host a relatively small, focused meeting to enable plenty of time for discussion and practical sessions.

Theory

Flavours of SBI, density estimation techniques, transfer learning, model comparison, hierarchical modelling, amortized inference, simulation budget, active learning, domain adaptation...

Applications

Spectro-photometric (resolved) SED fitting, dynamics, reionisation, AGN modelling, resolved stellar populations, gravitationl waves, CMB foregrounds, population level modelling...

Tools and Techniques

Differentiable programming, efficient sampling approaches, forward modelling frameworks, numerical simulation design, calibration and convergence testing...
